Summer Styles - Sock Bun
August 15, 2012
The truth is a chic, glamorous updo always looks too difficult to do on your own. But with a little help from JF Express Stylist Ashley Dewise, putting your hair in a fabulous sock bun is easy and simple!
First thing is first - you need a Hair Donut - I know funny name right? But this bun filler looks exactly like a doughnut, and you can find one at any beauty supply store!

1. Blowdry hair straight.
2. Put your hair in a ponytail, however high you want the bun to be.
3. Put the ponytail through the hole of the hair donut.
4. Pull the hair loosely from the center of the hair donut around it to cover it, creating a bun.
5. Pin hair underneath the hair donut to hold.

Summer Styles - Fishtail Braid
July 19, 2012
It is always a good idea to put your hair back as the weather stays hot! But no reason why you can't be creative with it!
Why not fishtail!?
Here's how you can do it in just 4 easy steps!
1. Separate your hair into two sections
2. From the left section - take a small piece from the extreme left, and cross it over the entire left section and under and into the right section.
3. On the right section - take a small piece from the extreme right, and cross it over the entire right section and under and into the left section.
4. Continue to repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have reached the end of your hair!
For an extra touch - add a cute hair tie to hold the braid!

Summer Styles - Beachy Waves
July 05, 2012
Without a doubt - this is everyone's favorite look for summer! And it is much easier than you think!
You can have bouncy smooth hair with loose curls in just a few short steps!
1. Curl your hair with a curling iron but be careful not to go all the way up towards the roots!
** Make sure when you are using a curling iron - roll hair away from your head so you don’t dent your hair!
2. Then brush out the curls to create smooth beautiful waves.
3. Spray to hold and you are done!

Summer Styles - Day to Night
June 28, 2012
Summer is here and the weather is hot! You may be worrying how to wear your hair, especially since spending hours getting ready in the morning will all go to waste the second you walk out your door!
But have no fear! The JF Team is here to help! Andre Davis, from the Julien Farel Madison Avenue Salon, says the best "day to night" hair during the summer is a clean, sleek ponytail.
"My clients are always asking me how they can get a nice clean ponytail without the frizz and fly-aways," Andre says. "But I tell them, it's so simple!"
He advises washing your hair with shampoo AND conditioner. Conditioner is key to keeping down frizz and fly-aways, because it helps to make hair soft and smooth from breakage and damage caused by coloring your hair and styling tools.
Once hair is partially dry, but still a little damp, comb it through with product. Andre recommends Julien Farel's Sculpting Gel for a stronger hold, or the Flexible Gel for a softer hold. Once hair is combed through pull the hair back and tie it into a ponytail. To get a little more creative with it - create a low part before pulling hair back!

Andre recommends using a medium size cloth hair tie! "No rubber! And make sure it's not too small," he says!
To transition to night - Bun, Bun, Bun!
Twist the ponytail arorund your finger and then wrap it as loosely as possible into a chignon. Pin it with bobby pins to hold. "It should be slightly messy. The best kept secret is that it doesn't have to be perfect!"
If you have some time, you can even curl the pieces from the ponytail with a hot curling iron and then pin them individually into a chignon.
"Then change your lip color and eye color you are ready to go!"
How to camouflage Rosacea with haircolor
April 19, 2011
by JF Color Experts
April is National Rosacea Awareness month
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition involving inflammation of the cheeks, nose, chin, forehead, or eyelids. It may appear as redness, prominent spider-like blood vessels, swelling, or skin eruptions similar to acne.
How to Camouflage It
Julien Farel Fifth Avenue colorist Ivan Torres provides some pointers on how to camouflage rosacea with haircolor-
Stay away from beigy blonds, ashy brunettes, and red hair. If you’re blond and you have rosacea, bring it down a notch, to more of a golden blond. Low lighting around the face area helps create shadows around the cheekbones and nose to disguise the redness on your face. If you’re a brunette, stay as neutral as possible. Warm tones, chestnut caramels and milk chocolate colors help blend the redness so that your skin is not noticeable. Red heads should go darker or blonder since the red color of your hair tends to emphasize the redness that comes from rosacea.

To Sun or Not to Sun
June 03, 2010
By JULIEN FAREL Senior Stylist David Kastin![]()
Summer is here and if you are anything like me you will find yourself at the beach as much as possible, which means by the end of the summer your hair will be a mess from the abuse of the sun, salt and chlorine water (if your beach happens to be a pool). Worry no more, for I have discovered the Phyto Sun Line. The line features protective sprays in two strengths depending on the intensity of the sun and how long you plan on being in it. It also boasts a moisturizing gel (my favorite) which holds and hydrates your hair. The best part Is that all three products provide UV protection. And then, last but not least, Phyto makes a gentle hydrating hair and body wash perfect for days in the sun. Now you can spend the summer at the beach and still have soft, hydrated hair and skin. PHYTO SUN LINE ... DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!!

Happy 80th Birthday Suzanne Von Liebig!
May 21, 2010
Mrs. Beth Jacobs and Mr. William Solloway hosted a lavish surprise birthday party for no. 1 JF client Suzanne Von Liebig at Doubles Club Thursday April 7th. The "Baroness," as she is affectionately called, seemed truely shocked at the 50 plus crowd of guests that flew in from far and wide. The club was transformed by event producer Albert Haje, into a gypsy themed taverna with a fortune teller and violinists. Julien Farel wishes Suzanne the happiest 80th and looks forward to celebrating many more!

Is a Picture Really Worth 1000 Words?
April 01, 2010
By JULIEN FAREL Senior Stylist David Kastin![]()
DEFINITELY, maybe more especially given the fact that most clients have trouble putting into words exactly what they want their hair to look like! Since key words such as “short,” “long,” “red,” and “blonde” can easily be misinterpreted, a picture will speak volumes. Therefore, a picture will give a clear idea of what it is you, the client may want.
As a hairdresser it will give me an inspiration to work off of. Although be warned: if your expectation is to match the photo exactly you may be disappointed for this is not always possible your hair may just not be able to do what is in the photo but a great hairdresser should be able to capture the feel of the photo and adjust it to what is suitable for you and your hair. So when selecting photos, be realistic and if you want to take it a step further bring in pictures of not only what you want but what you DON’T want as well! This will help your hairdresser in creating a look that you will be happy with. Remember the more information you provide, the better the result.
So the old adage that “a picture is worth a 1000 words” really is true. So start collecting your hair photos today and get the look you want!!
